Hustle complete another colossal comeback following 24-point deficit

The Memphis Hustle overcame a 24-point first half deficit to defeat the Wisconsin Herd 104-85 Saturday night at Menominee Nation Arena. The Hustle have completed a comeback of at least 16 points against teams entering the game with a winning record in three straight outings. The 19-point win marks the Hustle’s largest margin of victory this season.

Following the height of the Wisconsin lead, the Hustle outscored the Herd 67-24 to close the game, including 58-24 in the second half.

Memphis suffered a cold start from the field, shooting just 26.1 percent (6-23 FG) and missing all six of its three-point attempts in the first frame to help create a 29-15 Wisconsin lead. The Herd would run the lead to 61-37 with 2:27 remaining in the second quarter before the Hustle closed the first half on a 9-0 run and cut the deficit to 15.

The Hustle momentum carried over into the third quarter as Memphis would outscore the Herd 30-17 to tie the game multiple times before entering the final period trailing 78-76. At 81-80 after a Marquis Teague three-pointer with 10:20 remaining in the game, Memphis gained its first lead since the score was 9-8 with 6:21 left in the first quarter.

After shooting 54.3 percent (25-46 FG) from the field and 50 percent (7-14 3P) from three-point range in the first half, Wisconsin would muster just 25.6 percent (11-43 FG) overall, including 3-of-21 (.143) in the fourth quarter, and missed all 15 of its three-point attempts in the second half. Wisconsin’s 24 second half points and seven fourth quarter points mark season lows for a Hustle opponent in any half or quarter. The Hustle also grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and held a 26-10 advantage in second chance points. Additionally, Memphis won the points in the paint battle by a 62-40 margin.

Teague (25 points) led the Hustle scoring effort by recording his 11th game of 20 points or more to go with five boards and five assists. Austin Nichols posted 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, marking his second double-double of the season and his first career 20-10 game. Additionally, Nichols blocked two shots, marking his fifth straight game with multiple blocks. Trahson Burrell (16 points, 11 rebounds) notched his 10th double-double of the season. Omari Johnson and Durand Scott poured in 13 points apiece.

Former Grizzlies guard Xavier Munford led the Herd effort with 17 points, six assists and five rebounds. JeQuan Lewis and James Blackmon Jr. tallied 13 points apiece off the bench. Joel Bolomboy posted a double-double, scoring 12 points to go with a game-high 15 rebounds while Bucks assignee D.J. Wilson scored 12 points.

The Hustle conclude a three-game road trip on Tuesday, February 6 against the Iowa Wolves at 10:30 a.m. CT and will return home on Friday, Feburary 9 at 7 p.m. when the team takes on the Agua Caliente Clippers on Faith and Family Night, presented by Belhaven University, at Landers Center.
