Hustle falter late at home against Suns

The Memphis Hustle lost its fifth straight game Wednesday, 120-119, to the Northern Arizona Suns at Landers Center in a contest where the Hustle trailed by as many as 17. The teams have split their two meetings during the 2017-18 season.

The Suns started the game as hot as their moniker, scoring 40 points in the first quarter (17-27 FG, .630) and knocking down seven of their first 10 three-point attempts in the game. However, the Suns went cold in the second frame and missed 11 straight threes, helping the Hustle come back from a 17-point deficit to tie the game before trailing 62-58 at halftime. Memphis would eventually take their first lead (65-64) early in the third quarter since a 5-4 lead in the early minutes of the game.

Northern Arizona eventually would retake a nine-point lead early in the fourth quarter before the Hustle took the game down to the wire. The teams traded baskets in the final minute, resulting in a 119-118 Suns lead with 27.8 seconds left. Marquis Teague then tied the game after missing the front end of a pair of free throws with 18.4 seconds left. On the game’s final play, Archie Goodwin forced his way to the basket and was fouled by Kobi Simmons with 1.6 seconds left. Goodwin also missed the first of two free throws before taking the lead on the second attempt.

Hustle forward Omari Johnson led all scorers, finishing with a career-high 30 points (11-19 FG) and was 8-of-13 from beyond the arc, setting a new franchise record for most threes in a game. Two-way player Myke Henry added 26 points (10-18 FG), including 14 points in the fourth quarter, and grabbed a team-high tying eight rebounds. Teague scored 19 points (7-11 FG, 4-5 FT) and led the Hustle in assists with seven. Simmons (12 points, seven assists) and Dusty Hannahs (10 points) also reached double figures.

The Northern Arizona Suns were led by Danuel House who ended the night with 28 points (10-19 FG, 5-10 3P). Goodwin added 23 points (9-16 FG), including the final free throw with 1.6 seconds remaining in the game. Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson finished with 17 points (7-14 FG). Alec Peters dropped in 15 points while Lavoy Allen (12 points, 12 rebounds) posted a double-double. Josh Gray (11 points) and Mike Young (10 points) reached double digits as well.

The Hustle shot over 50 percent from the field (52.3%) from the game, however, Northern Arizona forced 21 turnovers (24 points) while committing just 12 (13 points) and owned an 18-9 edge on the offensive glass, half of which came from Allen.
