Hustle lose on the road against South Bay

The Memphis Hustle fell to the South Bay Lakers 137-132 Sunday evening at UCLA Health Training Center in a back-and-forth game that featured 14 ties and 10 lead changes and saw both teams lead by double digits.

Memphis led by as many as 11 in the first quarter, but the Lakers closed the period on an 18-2 run to take the lead. The end of quarter trend continued with the Hustle closing the half on an 8-0 run and South Bay closing the third period on a 13-3 run.

The Lakers became the third straight Hustle opponent to shoot 50 percent or better (52.6 percent) for an entire game, including 61.4 percent (27-of-44) in the second half. Additionally, the Lakers held a 25-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Four Hustle players scored 20-or-more points and all five starters reached at least 17 points. Omari Johnson (26 points, 10-17 FG) and Marquis Teague (25 points, eight assists) picked up where they left off in Santa Cruz. The duo is averaging 53.5 points per game thus far on the road trip. Ivan Rabb (23 points, 16 rebounds) recorded his fourth straight double-double and set a Hustle season-high for rebounds.

Durand Scott posted a season-high 22 points to go with six rebounds and four assists while shooting 4-of-5 from three-point range. Trahson Burrell had 14 of his 17 points in the first half and knocked down a career-high five three-pointers.

Travis Wear posted a career-high 29 points to lead South Bay while shooting 10-of-15 from the field (6-of-10 3P). Ivica Zubac scored 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting to go with nine rebounds. Alex Caruso (19 points, 13 assists) and Scott Machado (10 points, 10 assists) each recorded double-doubles. Vander Blue also chipped in 20 points for the Lakers.

The Hustle complete a three-game road trip with its third matchup of the season against the Iowa Wolves on Tuesday, December 19 at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. The squad will return to Landers Center on Friday, December 22 for a matchup with the Austin Spurs at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available and start for as low as $10.
