The Memphis Hustle fought off a slow start and improved to 3-2 with an 88-80 win over the Iowa Wolves Friday in a defensive-minded contest at Landers Center. The Hustle allowed just 31 points in the second half on 9-of-35 shooting for Iowa (.257), both season lows in a half for a Hustle opponent.
Iowa took control early and jumped out to a 39-26 lead with 6:50 remaining in the first half. The Hustle wasted no time scrapping their way back, going on a 13-0 run over the next 2:42 to tie the ballgame, and outscored the Wolves 24-10 to close the half with a one-point lead.
The Hustle began the final frame with a 67-65 lead, but Iowa started the quarter on an 8-0 run in the first three minutes. Memphis responded with a 21-7 run to close the game.
Memphis scored 19 points, a season-low for any quarter, and shot just 7-of-19 (.368) from the field with seven turnovers in the first quarter. The team then responded by scoring 31 points in the second period on 13-of-24 (.542) shooting and just two turnovers. The Hustle controlled the transition game, outscoring Iowa 27-7 in fastbreak points.
Deyonta Davis led the Hustle with 17 points and 10 rebounds and has scored at least 15 points in each of his games on assignment from the Grizzlies. Fellow Grizzlies assignee Jarell Martin approached a double-double (9 points, 8 rebounds). Marquis Teague (14 points) and Kobi Simmons (11 points) also scored in double digits for Memphis.
Wolves forward and two-way player Anthony Brown played all 48 minutes for Iowa and recorded game highs of 32 points and 13 rebounds to go with five assists. Perry Jones III contributed 16 points and seven rebounds. Additionally, Michael Bryson (11 points) and Tony Parker (10 points) recorded double digit scoring nights for Iowa.
The Hustle return to action on Tuesday, November 21 at 7 p.m. against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. The team will return to Memphis and make an appearance at FedExForum on Friday, November 24 at 7 p.m. against the Salt Lake City Stars. The Hustle won the previous meeting with the Stars at Landers Center 102-99 on November 5.
