Southaven, Miss. – The Memphis Hustle (22-7) swept its three-game regular season series with the Austin Spurs (15-13), earning a 115-111 win Monday night at Landers Center. The Hustle have now won six straight games against the Spurs and improve to 5-1 on the current homestand. With the game tied at 111-111, Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson put in a layup with 6.0 seconds remaining to give Memphis its final lead.
Despite shooting just 25.0 percent from the field, the Hustle trailed by only three (23-20) after one quarter of play. The Spurs shot 38.5 percent for the quarter with 18 of the team’s 23 points coming from the painted area. A Raynere Thornton three to start the second, followed by a Nino Johnson layup, gave the Hustle its first lead. However, Austin still managed to pad its lead up to six at halftime (51-45). Memphis trailed by just six at the break, despite shooting 35.4 percent from the field and 8.4 percent lower than the Spurs.
Memphis received a spark from Shaq Buchanan in the third, who set career highs for points (16) and field goals (6) in the period alone. After the Spurs gained their largest lead of the game at 58-49 with 9:35 remaining in the third, the Hustle went on a 25-9 run over a stretch of 5:53 to take its largest lead of the night at 74-67. Austin would chip away and tie the game at 81-81 heading into the fourth.
After its tough shooting performance in the first half, the Hustle shot 58.5 percent (24-41 FG) overall and 50.0 percent (7-14 3P) from three while knocking down all nine three-point attempts. In the fourth quarter, the teams played to eight ties and four lead changes before Memphis sealed the victory. Despite Marquis Teague’s 14-point effort in the period, Keldon Johnson had 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting to answer Memphis’ charge.
Buchanan finished with 23 points, including 21 in the second half, on 8-of-14 shooting while knocking down a career-high three three-pointers and also grabbing a career-high four steals. Dusty Hannahs had 23 points of his own while shooting 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. Teague (22 points, nine assists) fell just shy of a double-double and had 19 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, and six assists in the second half. Hollis-Jefferson scored a season-high 14 points and tied his season-high of six rebounds.
Dedric Lawson and Luka Samanic had a dominant night inside with each posting double-doubles. Lawson had 19 points and 10 rebounds by halftime, finishing with 24 points and 17 rebounds on 11-of-19 shooting. Samanic had a game-high 27 points to go with 12 rebounds on 12-of-17 from the field. Johnson finished with 21 points and five assists. Austin ended the game shooting 48.0 percent from the field, but knocked down just 19.4 percent (6-31 3P) of its three-point attempts.
The Hustle finish the season-long seven-game homestand Wednesday night at Landers Center with tipoff set for 7 p.m. against the Texas Legends.
