Local tryout attendee Johnson looks to impress at training camp

The Memphis Hustle Open Tryouts last month attracted nearly 130 basketball players and represented all archetypes of the game. Cordarius Johnson was one of them.

Now, after attending the team’s second day of tryouts in Southaven, the 6-5, 215-pound guard finds himself on the Hustle’s training camp roster after hearing his name called during the 2017 NBA G League Draft on Oct. 21.

Head Coach Glynn Cyprien explained that Johnson’s strength and versatility are what caught his eye at the tryout.

“I like his physicality,” said Cyprien. “He’s a strong player and he can play multiple positions. Obviously, he played wing in college, he could play some wing for us. He played some four man in college. He’s a tough player and brings a tough mindset to the game. He can really defend and I like what he is doing with the ball club so far.”

Johnson, who spent four seasons at Louisiana Tech (2010-14), is looking to display his work ethic and the defense previously mentioned by Cyprien.

“I want to show the coaches that I’m going to bring it every day,” said Johnson. “I’m going to play hard defense every time down the floor and just give it my all when I’m on the court.”

Cyprien wants to see more consistency moving forward and praised Johnson’s knowledge of the game.

“We need some consistency now,” Cyprien explained. “I think he has got into better shape the last couple of days. He knows how to play, he has a really good basketball IQ and he’s got a good feel [for the game].”

The 2017 Hustle Training Camp, presented by Select Physical Therapy, continues with practice Friday as the team prepares for its Oct. 30 preseason matchup against the Lakeland Magic at RP Funding Center in Lakeland, Fla.
