The Memphis Hustle, the Grizzlies’ NBA G League affiliate, today announced that the team has acquired forward Jarvis Varnado via waiver claim.
Varnado (6-9, 230), a Mississippi State alum, spent the 2017-18 season with Tecnyconta Zaragosa of the Spanish ACB where he played in 21 games (10 starts) and averaged 7.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.38 blocks in 20.9 minutes per game. Varnado appeared in 37 NBA games over two seasons (2012-14) for the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics.
The Brownsville, Tenn., native has made 53 appearances (48 starts) in the NBA G League, including several assignments while playing for the Miami Heat, averaging 13.9 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game in 29.9 minutes while being named an initial All-Star selection in 2014 with the Iowa Energy.
While at Mississippi State (2006-10), Varnado won the 2010 Lefty Driesell Award, given to the national defensive player of the year, joining Grizzlies assignee Jevon Carter in holding that distinction. The 30-year-old was additionally honored as First Team All-SEC twice (2009, 2010), SEC Defensive Player of the Year three times (2008, 2009, 2010) and 2009 SEC Tournament MVP. Varnado has also played professionally in Turkey, Italy, Puerto Rico and Israel.
